These terms cover your use of Open—Shape ("we", "us"), a browser-based guitar chord and tuning tool. By using the app, you agree to them.
Open—Shape helps you find chord voicings, explore tunings, build progressions, and tune your guitar by ear using your device's microphone. It runs in your browser; there's no account to create and nothing to install.
Your custom tunings and saved progressions are stored locally in your browser, on your own device — see the Privacy Policy for details. Because nothing is backed up on our end, if you clear your browser's storage or switch devices, that data is gone. Back up anything you'd hate to lose.
Use Open—Shape for its intended purpose. Don't attempt to disrupt the service, reverse engineer it to build a competing product from our code, or use it in any way that violates applicable law.
The Open—Shape app, its design, and its code are owned by Michael Gordon Hix. The acoustic guitar samples used for audio playback are recordings by the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios, made freely available for any project without restriction — see the in-app credits for the full notice.
Open—Shape is provided "as is." Chord voicings, pitch detection, and tuning readings are offered as a practice aid — they're generally accurate, but we don't guarantee perfection, and the app is not a substitute for your own ear or a professional instrument technician. We're not responsible for any outcome from relying on it, including a string tuned wrong.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of Open—Shape, including loss of locally stored data.
We may update these terms as the app changes. We'll update the effective date above when we do, and note material changes inside the app.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Nebraska, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
